How to Maintain Tire Pressure | New Orleans, LA

February 17, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

There are a lot of things you need to know about your car in order to keep it running properly. There are certainly pros and cons for new and used cars.  Older, used cars need attention in order to prevent costly repairs, while new cars and trucks benefit from proper maintenance in order to preserve the value of the car. And while some routine procedures can be costly, time consuming, and require a visit to a mechanic’s garage or car dealership, others can be quick, easy, and painless. Perhaps the easiest thing you can do on a regular basis for your car is to make a habit of checking your car’s tire pressure. It’s easy, costs very little, and can save you from having to deal with expensive repairs down the road.

Tire Pressure

Having low tire pressure can lead to decreased performance when cornering and braking, and can even lead to tire failure in some cases. Since tire failure usually results in a serious accident, it’s not something to mess around with. While many people check the tires themselves to see what pressure level to maintain, this is actually the wrong place to look. The numbers listed on tires are usually the maximum capacity of pressure, not the recommended amount. As it varies from car to car, check your car’s owner’s manual to see where the information is printed- usually on the driver’s door pillar, the glove compartment door, or the gas filler door.

When it comes to checking the tire pressure, try to avoid the popular pencil-shaped gauges, which can be frequently inaccurate.  Digital gauges or even analog-dial gauges are typically a safer bet. Also remember to only check tire pressure when the tires are cold- in other words, before the tires have been recently driven. This ensures that the air is at the proper temperature for an accurate reading. And finally, be sure to check all four tires. It sounds obvious, but steer away from taking shortcuts here. Just because the first three tires are good doesn’t mean the fourth one is.

Check your tires seasonally, as well as before any long road trip in order to stay precise on your tire pressure levels. You can also ask your car service professional to check for you during your next service, typically at little or no extra cost. This can also provide you a way to double check the accuracy of your own gauge. However you decide to do it, just make sure that checking the air pressure levels on your tires becomes a regular part of your car’s check-up.

Introducing the 2015 Ford F Series | New Orleans, LA

February 14, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

In production since 1948, the Ford F-series is one of the longest running truck series in the world. From the ever popular F-150 to more obscure models, it’s a line of trucks that is able to cover basically every need a truck enthusiast could imagine. With the thirteenth generation of Ford F-series trucks having debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show last month, the legacy is set to continue in 2015. While the F-series hasn’t seen any type of major overhaul, there are a few key upgrades that move the trucks into more powerful, economic, and environmentally-friendly territory.

2015 Ford F150

The 2015 line, which takes much of its exterior design from the 2013 Ford Atlas concept vehicle, offers a cutting-edge yet rugged design with hard, elegant angles. The trucks will continue to use the trusted body-on-frame construction, but will now use frames built from 77% high strength steel, up from the 23% used in previous iterations. This will result in a sturdier, more durable frame.

The new F-series was also built with fuel economy in mind, most notably in its increased use of aluminum for the body. Due to the lighter weight of aluminum, the body itself weighs 700lbs less and will therefore boast increased MPG over its predecessors. Fear not though- the aluminum-intensive design went through numerous tests and is still more than sturdy enough to handle even the most demanding of tasks.

Under the hood, the new F-series will be available with a variety of engines, including the Ford EcoBoost V-6 in either a 2.7 Liter or 3.5 Liter. It will also feature a 6 speed automatic engine. Different trims available include XL, XLT, King Ranch, and Platinum.

With the 2015 F-series line, Ford is taking an already spectacular truck design and pushing it to the next level. Although there is still much yet unknown about the new F-150, it is sure to be right up there with the best vehicles that Ford has produced.

Ford Ecoboost Performance | New Orleans, LA

February 13, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

You may, like millions of Americans right now, be concerned about the fuel efficiency of your car or truck. Like many Americans, you may also be worried about the environmental impact your new car or truck could potentially be causing. With so many buzz words floating around, it can be very hard to discern between what will actually be beneficial and what won’t.

Ford Ecoboost

It’s likely that you’ve at least heard about Ford Ecoboost, whether from a Ford commercial, from a salesman at a car dealership, or even from a friend. While it may sound ambiguous or abstract at first, Ecoboost is simply a family of direct injection, turbocharged petrol engines co-developed by Ford and FEV engineering to be used in Ford cars. These engines use a hybrid technology to emphasize fuel economy as well as increased power and performance. Ecoboost engines can achieve up to 20% better MPG and can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15% as compared to traditional engines. Comparable to hybrid engines in terms of environmental friendliness, Ford cars equipped with Ecoboost engines can still protect the environment without sacrificing engine performance and torque. Ford Ecoboost engines are both versatile and affordable alternatives, and have been met with universal acclaim since their introduction in 2009.

The number of Ford cars and trucks which utilize the Ecoboost performance system is steadily growing, with the 2014 Ford Fiesta St, 2013 Ford F-150, 2015 Ford Mustang, and 2015 Lincoln MKC being among the newer cars with this option available. But with continued rise in popularity of affordable, economically friendly engines, expect to see similar technology implemented in even more Ford cars and trucks in the future.

Valentine’s Day in New Orleans, LA

February 12, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to start doing some planning for how you and your special someone, are going to spend the day (if you haven’t already!). While extravagant gifts like a brand new car or expensive jewelry may send an over-the-top romantic message, other times it’s how you spend your time together that creates the most precious memories. Here are a few suggestions that may help you and your significant other make some memories to cherish for years to come.

Valentine's Day at Lamarque Ford

Although there’s nothing at all new or novel about going to a nice restaurant on Valentine’s Day, it’s something that is almost expected- and thus can’t be overlooked. Luckily, New Orleans has no shortage of restaurants that are both delicious and romantic. New Orleans classic locations such as Vincent’s never fail to disappoint, just make sure you call far enough in advance to get a reservation. If you favor something a little less orthodox, try venturing out to Metairie or Kenner for an unknown hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Trying a new restaurant together can be a fun and exciting way to mix things up. Of course, you can always forego eating out altogether and cook a meal instead – you don’t have to go out to have a romantic meal together. Sometimes cooking in can be just as much fun, and at only a fraction of the price.

After dinner, there are a variety of ways to enjoy the wonderful city of New Orleans with your special someone. If you’ve never gone for a carriage ride through the French Quarter, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to enjoy one; or, even if you have, it’s always a great way to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in America. Also, touring all the music venues on Frenchman street can always provide a night full of dancing and fun. If you want something a little more upscale or elegant, however, the Mahalia Jackson Theater will be showing Massenet’s Cinderella performed by the New Orleans Opera.

There’s always the safe fall back plan of going to see a movie. With no shortage of theaters in New Orleans showing everything from sci-fi to romantic comedies, there’s sure to be something both of you can agree on. Those who want to be a little more adventurous, however, could try venturing over to the Prytania Theater to see Rocky Horror Picture Show on Valentine’s Day at midnight. Sure it’s a bit non-traditional, but it’s sure to be a way to mix things up if you’re tired of the same old-same old.

While this list merely scratches the surface of what you could do in New Orleans on Valentine’s Day, hopefully it will get you thinking about fun, romantic ways to spend the evening with your date!

The Future of the Automobile

January 22, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

The automobile has come a long way since Henry Ford debuted his brand new car, the Model T, in 1908. That car, which introduced the country to a whole new world of technological innovations, was just the first step in a continuing process of refinement to create safer, more comfortable, and better performing cars. While the automotive industry has been introducing technological advances gradually over the last century, 2014 looks to be a huge leap for technology in cars in the form of digital user interfaces.

A quick glance at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is very telling for where consumers and industry experts alike see the future of cars heading. A new partnership between technology companies NVIDIA and Google, along with a handful of car makers, is looking to forgo proprietary software in favor of Google Android-powered open source software in order to move towards what people are calling a “connected” car. This Google powered technology looks to serve two main functions in cars. The first is vehicle-to-vehicle safety systems that can interact with other cars or even potentially traffic lights or cameras, whereby the car can either alert the driver or even assist in braking or handling. Secondly, they can work in providing the driver with information or safe-for-driving entertainment. Access to music, navigation, and email can be used and also synced with data at home or in the office.

Always a step ahead, Ford released Ford SYNC in 2007 which allows drivers to make telephone calls, control music, and even order pizza without having to take a hand off the wheel. The Ford SYNC system, which uses a Microsoft Windows-based software, can sync with other devices via Bluetooth or USB and can get 911 assistance, check traffic reports, get access to car health reports, and even remotely access an office computer. Since 2007, Ford has continued to improve and update SYNC and has included it in a significant number of new Ford cars and Ford trucks.

These technologies are helping to pave the way for a safer, more enjoyable automobile for the future and Ford is leading the way. There is no limit to what having connected cars can provide for consumers, and it will be exciting to see where the technology takes the automotive industry.

Best Driving Apps

January 20, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Best Driving AppsIf you have a smartphone, then there are practically limitless opportunities for combining technology with driving. Maybe you want to get the newest music to test out the speakers on your new car as you drive off of the car dealership, or maybe you just want to make sure the affordably priced used car you’ve had your eye on isn’t going to single-handedly destroy the ozone layer. Whatever your goal, there is probably an app that can help. While there are countless apps to choose from, here are a few of the most useful:

Spotify – (iPhone/Android, free) The perfect app for any music fan, Spotify on mobile lets you stream music directly from your phone. If your car has an auxiliary input, you can connect the phone to your car’s stereo to use your phone as a music source. While access to the full streaming library requires an existing Spotify premium account, you can use the Spotify radio function completely free of charge.

Google Maps – (iPhone, Android, free) While many phones come with Google Maps already installed, if you don’t have the app yet you are missing out on one of the best services a smartphone can offer. As perhaps the definitive maps application, Google Maps offers overhead and street views of just about any location you could ever hope to find. You can also enable the GPS on your phone along with Google Maps to get real-time driving directions.

Waze – (iPhone, Android, free) Waze is a community based app that utilizes user submitted data to organize traffic, gas, and road information. Not only can it help you find the cheapest gas, it can also tell you if there are any traffic problems on your usual route or even suggest automatic alternative routes.

GasBuddy – (iPhone/Android , Free)For anybody that has ever driven more than 5 miles to get gas or has filled up only to pass a gas station later with lower prices. GasBuddy has a database of well over 100,000 fuel stations and can display at any given moment the 10 nearest stations to you, as well as who has the lowest prices. The pricing system is derived from AAA and satellite companies, so you can feel confident that the prices that are reflected are accurate.

GreenMeter – (iPhone, $5.99) greenMeter uses a unique algorithm that uses power and fuel economy information of your car to calculate your fuel and consumption and cost, as well as your environmental impact, based on your driving style. Using the app can not only help reduce your car’s negative impacts on the environment, it can also help cater your driving style to be more cost effective.  greenMeter can be especially useful in lots of stop and go traffic, such as Uptown New Orleans or in 5 o’clock traffic to Metairie or Kenner.

Getting Your Oil Changed

January 16, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

If there’s one part of caring for your car that is the most consistently neglected and frequently misunderstood, it is getting your oil changed. Although there are many things that should be done regularly to make sure your car is running in top form, getting your oil changed is one of the simplest and most effective. A brand new car can benefit from an oil change to ensure the maximum working lifespan of the engine, while making sure to regularly change the oil in a used car that’s been around for a while can make sure that the engine doesn’t fail. But why do we even need to bother changing the oil in a car? What exactly happens during the oil change and why is it important for the car’s health?

Get your oil changed

Cars need oil to lubricate many of the moving parts within the engine. The pistons, for example, consist of rapidly pumping metal parts that move against one another. Without the oil to lubricate these parts, the friction caused by the metal parts rubbing against one another could cause enough heat for the engine parts to weld themselves together which would result in a dead engine.

But why can’t you just keep the same oil in your car? For starters, after a while dirt will accumulate in the oil. The oil filter will help keep the oil clean for a while, but eventually the filter will clog and dirt will be able to pass through the relief filter. Having oil full of dirt or sediment will cause wear and deterioration in the engine. Since the filter is typically replaced with an oil change, every oil change ensures that the oil will continue to be relatively dirt free.

Additionally, many of the positive additives in the oil such as detergents and friction reducers wear out after a while. Once they start to wear out, the oil won’t lubricate as well as it should.  The oil can also breakdown over time due to high temperatures, making it less effective.

Most experts agree that any car, whether a new car or used car, should have its oil changed roughly every 5000 miles. This number, however, can vary depending on a number of different variables. If you live in a climate that is extremely hot or cold, like, say, the summer temperatures of New Orleans, you might consider getting your oil changed more often. Similarly, if you use a truck to regularly carry heavy loads, a more frequent oil change schedule is recommended. Older cars that burn oil will also need their oil changed more often.

Getting your oil changed is typically quick and convenient. With many car dealerships offering oil changes, as well as most car maintenance locations, there is likely someplace nearby your home or work that can do it for you. Now that you’re well informed, there’s no excuse not to get it done!

In the Market for a New Car?

January 14, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Although there are many instances in which buying a used car is the right decision, often times it’s just too hard to pass up the features and flexibility that come with buying a brand new car. But with so many features and options on the market, it can be very daunting to know which ones you should look for. Often times what new car buyers are looking for and what they should be looking for are quite different. While certainly there are no “wrong” features if that’s truly what you want, but many times the most useful or beneficial features aren’t the most obvious ones to look for.

The majority of the most popular features for new car buyers are typically cosmetic or convenience options. Here are some of the more popular features with consumers:

Need a New Car

Cruise Control- while it may not always be practical when stuck in the stop-and-go traffic of Garden District New Orleans or the French Quarter, being able to set a constant speed for your car to automatically maintain can make trips to or from Kenner or Covington much more enjoyable.

Navigation systems- although similar technology in smart phones and tablets may soon make in-car navigation systems obsolete, systems that can coordinate fast routes and help navigate unfamiliar areas nonetheless remain a very popular accessory for new cars.

Leather seats- although many budget level cars now come with leather seats, it is still seen by most as the ultimate luxury symbol. While not everybody agrees that they are more comfortable, they are still coveted for their luxurious look and feel.

Seat heaters- Although New Orleans drivers don’t need them quite as often, having a seat heater can be a lifesaver during the year’s coldest months.

While these sought-after features are certainly nice to have, there are many other features that while not necessarily as popular, are arguably even more important to have in your next new car purchase:

Side airbags- Most cars have front airbags, but not all cars have side airbags which cushion impact on the much thinner side doors in case of a crash. Having side airbags could be the difference between injury or no injury in a crash- especially important in New Orleans, which saw an increase in fatal car accidents this year.

Anti-lock brakes- Skidding tires do not have the same control or traction as turning wheels. Anti-lock brakes, or ABS, pump the brakes on and off at a rapid pace during braking to reduce the likelihood of losing control of the car while braking.

Electronic stability/ skid control system- These systems use a series of braking, accelerating, and steering sensors to detect and aid in what it senses the driver is trying to do. By braking or shifting power to specific wheels the system is able to direct the car more accurately to where the driver is trying to point it.

All of these features are important and will vary depending on the individual preferences and needs of each car buyer, it is always important to remember that accessories and features should go deeper than just the cosmetic or luxury options; make sure that the new car you purchase meets all of your needs to ensure that your car provides the safest and most enjoyable ride possible.  Hopefully now the next time you step onto the car dealership, you’ll be equipped with all the information to make the most informed decision.

Getting Ready for Super Bowl XLVIII

January 12, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

In the wake of a heated NFL season full of close division races and surprising finishes, all eyes are turning towards Super Bowl XLVIII to see which team will come out on top for the 2013-14 season. While the main focus will be on the battle between the two teams on the field, the Super Bowl has already had its share of controversy.

Super Bowl

Perhaps the most significant issue surrounding the game is the choice of stadium coupled with the weather conditions. The game will be played on Sunday, February 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The stadium, home to both the New York Giants and the New York Jets, will be the first stadium to have two host teams for a Super Bowl game. More importantly, however, is that it will mark the first time a Super Bowl will be played outdoors in a cold weather environment. Furthermore, weather predictions indicate that intense snow storms during the game are extremely likely.

While a minority are excited about what will likely be an unorthodox Super Bowl, many sports fans and analysts are upset on grounds that it won’t be a proper circumstance to match up the two competing teams. With cold weather conditions plaguing many important games of the regular season, it is likely that the game could be dictated as much by the weather as by the skills of the teams themselves. The NFL has also announced that in case of a bad weather forecast in the days leading up to the game, they will consider moving the game to either the Saturday before or the Monday or Tuesday after, which will likely lead to even more controversy.

While initially it looked as if there might be no halftime show during the game due to the cold weather, as it would make assembling and disassembling a stage difficult during a blizzard. However, in September the league announced that Bruno Mars would be the headlining performer for the game. This keeps with the NFL’s tradition of booking big name entertainment in order to prevent counterprogramming like what happened during the 1992 halftime show.

Last year’s New Orleans-based Super Bowl proved to be an enormous success, so if the cold weather matchup doesn’t fare favorably it is unlikely that many Super Bowls will be played in outdoor cold weather in the future. Furthermore, New Orleans is already a finalist to host the 2018 Super Bowl which would make it home to the most NFL Super Bowl matchups in the history of the league with a grand total of 11.

Regardless of the outcome of the game, the controversy surrounding the matchup has already ensured that it will be a memorable Super Bowl!

New Cars vs Used Cars

January 10, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Any time you’re in the market to purchase a vehicle, it’s a time full of endless questions and decisions. Car or truck? What features do I need included? What’s the best payment plan? What color should I get? But one of the most fundamental and hotly discussed choices is whether to buy a new car or a used car. Sometimes your wallet says to go with the reliable used car that’s been around for a while, but you can’t stop visualizing yourself driving a brand new truck off the lot. There are certainly pros and cons for both new and used cars, but breaking down the advantages and disadvantages of each should help aid the decision making process the next time you find yourself at a car dealership with more options than you know what to do with.

New vs Old Cars

There are several main advantages to buying a new car. For one, you know that nobody has abused it before and everything should be functioning at 100%. You can also be far more specific when it comes to features and options; you can get it however you want it equipped. You also get the benefit of having the full factory warranty in case something goes wrong. Plus, who doesn’t love that new car smell? Buying a new car is simple- what you see is what you get.

Buying a used car, however, can typically be more complex. The main advantages of buying a used car are obvious. Having to pay only a fraction of what the car would cost new is a major selling point, and often times you can get a 3 year old car for up to 40% off what it would cost new. However, you may have to spend a little extra money to check the condition of the car. If you are buying from an individual or classified ad, you will want to check to make sure the odometer reading is honest. A service like Carfax or Autocheck will give you a history of the vehicle using its Vehicle Identification Number including title changes and whether or not the car has been to a junkyard. Carfax estimates around 10% of its listings have had some sort of problem, so it’s always a safe bet to check. It’s also a good idea to get a trusted mechanic to look over the car prior to purchase. These additional steps may be time consuming and expensive, especially if you are considering multiple different used cars, but if your priority is spending less money then it may be worth it for you.

You might also consider “certified” used car programs that are backed by manufacturers. Certified vehicles are typically no more than three years old and must pass a series of inspections before they can become certified. These cars have less risk of uncertainty, and also often come with a fresh warranty.

In the end, whether you buy a brand new truck or a beat up old car is completely up to you. But you can feel more confident next time you’re surrounded by a sea of cars at the dealership by looking critically at both options and making the decision that best suits your individual needs.
