Gas Prices Plummet In Time For Holiday Season | Lamarque Ford | New Orleans

December 9, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Thanks Giving drivers were greeted last week with a surprise at the pump: gas prices have been dropping consistently and are now at record lows, which started a driving craze. Now that we’re back at work, the trend seems to keep going. But for how long? Will this drive an SUV and big engine boom, as some suggest? Let’s follow the money and get to the bottom of this.

low gas prices New Orleans Lamarque Ford

As you may already know, crude oil production (and a million other factors) dictates refined gasoline prices. So what happens when when there’s an overproduction of oil and a surplus of refined gasoline? Prices go down. So low in fact, that we’re are seeing recession level prices, when demand was low and production was up. So what does this mean for consumers and car manufacturers?

There’s this theory floating around that we might see an increase in SUV and big car sales, which we think is silly to associate it to the gas price phenomenon. For one, Ford’s SUV division has been growing constantly, with or without low gas prices. Second, car buyers moved away from big, inefficient engines not just because of crude oil prices, but because they actually care about the environment. The new generation of drivers has fueled (no pun intended) an increase on powerful yet efficient cars, like the EcoBoost series from Ford.

Ten year Historical Gas Prices U.S. New Orleans Lamarque Ford

So in the mean time, let’s not freak out. A quick look at this 10 year average gas price in the U.S. tells us gas prices are historically higher than today. Although it is great for consumers to have access to cheap gas, we need to think about the other side of the coin. Just this morning, some news outlets were discussing oil companies planning on laying-off workers because of this same reason. Also, some lawmakers are in talks to increase gasoline taxes, since prices have dropped. So is there a happy medium?

While every driver would like to pay $2.00 or less for a gallon, others will argue there needs to be a sustainable gasoline market, both for consumers and producers. Remember, you don’t need to sacrifice power and speed to get great fuel efficiency. In 2009 Ford introduced its first EcoBoost, which is a line of small, turbo-charged engines that deliver great power and little fuel consumption. Today, almost every Ford vehicle comes in an EcoBoost configuration, form the sporty 2015 Mustang, to the powerful F-150.

Greatest Movie And TV Fords | Lamarque Ford | New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner

May 20, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Ford has always been known to make a statement, including a heavy presence in pop culture for the last several decades. Many of our favorite movies and shows feature at least one iconic Ford model that saves the day, solves the crime or gets the girl.

1966 Ford Lincoln Batmobile

We have selected ten of the most memorable films and series starring Ford vehicles, from the oldest to most recent. Movie buff or not, you may recognize a few of these famous Fords.

Batman (1966) (series) – There isn’t much not to love about Batman, and before Michael Keaton, George Clooney and Christian Bale wore the mask, Adam West ran the show in the 1960 series. However, the big star of the television program was none other than the 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura Concept Car, also know as the “Batmobile”.

Starsky and Hutch (1975) (series) – If the Starsky and Hutch series tells us anything it is that you don’t need a fancy suit styled after a flying mammal to fight crime, but you might need a red and white Ford Gran Torino. The “Striped Tomato” became emblematic for the show that was centered around two street-smart cops solving crimes. Although the “Striped Tomato” was switched from a ’74 model to a ’73 model throughout the run of the series the car was made to look identical in each scene.

Grease (1978) – “Auto-matic, Systo-matic, Hydro-matic”, it was the 1948 Ford De Luxe “Greased Lightning” that had audiences loving the famous 70’s musical, set in the 1950s. The car not only appeared in several of the high-energy singing and dancing scenes but was responsible for the final drag race that took place near the end of the movie when Danny and our beloved “T-Birds” triumphantly took the win.

RoboCop (1987) – In the 1980s, Ford was taking some big hits from the competition. That is, until a line of cars only a year old at the time called the Ford Taurus found its way on to the set of RoboCop. The movie, set in a fictionalized Detroit used all Taurus LX’s as police cars and brought the line to life. Still today Taurus is the fourth-oldest nameplate in the Ford family sold in North America.

Thelma and Louise (1991) – If you’re going to go on a cross-country road trip filled with self discovery might as well do it in a stylish 1966 Ford Thunderbird. Although the unlikely duo pack many miles on the getaway ride, the most memorable scene is the dramatic exit when the Ford convertible flies through the air off a cliff from the Grand Canyon.

Jurassic Park (1993) – The jungle, the ripples in the water, the green and yellow Ford Explorer XLT, Jurassic Park gave a whole new meaning to “built Ford tough” when angry t-rex ripped this 1991 SUV to shreds and it still lasted (almost) throughout the rest of the movie.

Dumb and Dumber (1994) – You may have a hard time recognizing this 1984 customized Ford Econoline, but when Harry and Lloyd navigated this K-9 inspired van to Aspen it was hard to forget.

The Big Lebowski (1998) –  No vehicle quite represented the carefree white-Russian drinking “Dude” like his worn in 1973 Ford Gran Torino. This 90’s cult favorite showed the 73′ model Torino in a new light and was one of the iconic pieces that made this movie so hilarious to watch.

Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) – The Ford Mustang has always been an incredible classic timepiece for American pop culture, and in the fast-action film the revamped 1973 Mustang made this millennium movie standout from others of its kind.

Scooby Doo (2002) – Last on our list is probably one of the most well-known of the big screen automobile’s that belonged to a group of problem solving teenagers and one very hungry dog. “The Mystery Machine”, a bright blue and green custom Ford Econoline van, has always been an eye-catching set of wheels since its cartoon series in 1969.

True Fuel Economy | Lamarque Ford | Metairie, Kenner, New Orleans

April 22, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Most of today’s fuel cars are in a never-ending race to mpg goodness, due in part to an increase in fuel prices and environmentally conscious consumers. Nearly all car manufacturers offer an economy model, priced at around $15,000, that achieves decent gas mileage (±30 mpg). However,  if you want serious fuel efficiency (+60 mpg) you’ll have to spend way more money. Let’s look at the current alternatives from the top car manufacturers around the globe.

Test drive the new Ford Fiesta at Lamarque Ford in Kenner

Volkswagen’s base model, the Jetta S, is priced at $16,895 and offers 23/24 mpg. The Jetta, classified as a compact car, has a history of reliability and it’s backed from one of the most prestigious brands in the market, not to mention its appealing European looks. However, 24 mpg is not a substantial figure in today’s market, and it will cost you an extra $4,000 to get to a decent 30/42 mpg. That’s right, Volkswagen’s green offering is a powerful clean diesel TDi, and it will set you back $21,295.

Toyota goes a step further and offers the Yaris, a subcompact vehicle that achieves higher fuel efficiency in 30/37 mpg. Unlike the spacious Jetta, the Yaris comes in a hatchback only version and it’s significantly smaller. However, Toyota offers a wide range of hybrid and electric vehicles, including SUVs. Starting at $19,080, the Prius gives you an astonishing fuel efficiency of 53 mpg and a roomier interior. Toyota also offers an all electric SUV, the RAV4, with an impressive 76 mpg equivalent.

Ford also offers a subcompact capable of a modest 27/38 mpg. The Ford Fiesta has proven to be a popular choice as it’s priced at an attractive $14,100. Ford’s other green offerings include hybrid versions of C-Max and Fusion, along with an all electric Ford Focus, which is rated at 99 mpg equivalent.

Other car manufacturers in the U.S. offer similar options with comparable fuel economy. However, Elio Motors, an upcoming brand, has promised to produce a vehicle capable of 84 mpg at only $6,800. Stay tuned to see how this new car does and don’t forget to stop by your local Ford dealership to see their current hybrid and green models.

F-150 Brings LED Tech to Trucks| Lamarque Ford | New Orleans, Kenner

March 21, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

Headlights were first introduced in vehicles in the late 1880’s. The first generation of headlamps were acetylene or oil based, and they came as a response to the high number of accidents that occurred at night. In 1898, the first wave of electric lamps debuted, but proved to be a failure due to the short life of the filaments and lack of power to keep them on. However, in 1912, Cadillac introduced the first good enough electric lighting system, which served as the cornerstone of modern day headlights.

2015 Ford F-150 Healights

Today, all vehicles that operate in public roads are required to have headlights. Modern lamps generate light from different sources like tungsten, tungsten-halogen, HID (high intensity discharge) and LED (light emitting diode). Although LED technology has been around for some time (christmas lights, anyone?), it wasn’t until 2007 that their performance was on par with other technologies. The first production vehicle with factory installed LED headlamps was the 2007 Lexus LS 600h, one of Lexus flagship cars.

Seven years later, however, LED technology is still not widely adopted in the automotive industry. LED lights have proven to be brighter and more energy efficient than other lamps, but they are still cost prohibitive for non-luxury cars. That’s why in 2015, Ford is taking a leap forward and bringing that very technology to their 6,000 lb workhorse, the new 2015 Ford F-150. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this decision.

While redesigning the F-150, Ford engineers realized traditional headlights have to be replaced very often, so it was a natural choice to go with the long lasting LED option. LED lights also offer superior light quality and range, which translates into better visibility. Ford is the first manufacturer to bring LED lights to a truck, leaving competitors (and halogen lamps) in the dust.

Remember that along with airbags and seat belts, headlights play an important role in your vehicle’s safety. Statistically, most auto accidents happen at night, and better headlamps can significantly improve your chances of avoiding one. Stop by your local dealership so you can see the difference for yourself, as other high end vehicles are already using LED technology.

Flagship Cars | Lamarque Ford | New Orleans, Kenner, Metairie

March 19, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

For years, car manufacturers have tried to differentiate themselves from their competition. Flagship cars, namely the Shelbys, Camaros and Corvettes of the world, serve as an appealing image that attracts new buyers to those brands. At first glance, flagship cars are all about speed, sex appeal and youthfulness, traits car brands use to connect at an emotional level with potential customers. But there’s more to it.

Mustang Shelby 500

This phenomenon is known in psychology as the halo effect, hence ‘halo cars’, and is nothing but our perceptual generalization of attributes. In other words, consumers associate these glorified vehicles with the brand as a whole, thus buying into aspirational goals. The halo effect is present in every industry and applies to products and services alike.

Halo or flagship cars are often criticized for luring buyers into the dealership, which then end up buying affordable options with lower quality standards. However, quite the opposite is true. Halo cars have a tremendous positive effect on brand recognition and new technology development, which bring in better options for consumers in the long run. Let’s explore the benefits cars like the Shelby 500 bring to the table.

As you may have guessed, flagship cars have bigger development budgets than their entry level counterparts. This allows for designers and engineers to explore new manufacturing techniques and materials. For instance, The Ford Motor Company just developed a new prototyping process for their concept cars, which could eventually be used for mass production; the 2007 Lexus LS 406 required Toyota to create the world’s strongest stamping press; countless of today’s in-car technologies were first introduced in high end vehicles, then trickled down to affordable ones.

From a marketing perspective, the halo car gives brands the opportunity to show off their latest innovations. It also gives consumers better visibility in terms of what’s coming in the following  years. If we take a car like the next generation Ford Expedition, which features blind spot assist and rear view cameras, we can then assume such technology will be available in coming entry level vehicles.

2013 Ford Fusion Nascar

Racing cars make an excellent ‘halo car’ example. As car manufacturers push technology to the limit, we get to see our everyday sedans in action. Nascar teams use modified versions of Camrys, Fusions and Impalas to show off the engines; Subarus and Minis compete in rally races to show off their steering and suspensions. This again, brings consumers closer to the brand and allows for a more honest relationship.

So don’t forget to stop by your local dealership and experience the latest technology available today.

Ford Ramps Virtual Crash Computing Power | Lamarque Ford | New Orleans

March 12, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

In an effort to keep up with the increasing demand of virtual crash test data, Ford is increasing its investment in computing capabilities by 50% in hopes of maximizing the overall number of virtual crash tests. Just in the past 10 years alone, there have been over 2 million virtual crash tests.

Lamarque Ford Crash Test

Currently, a virtual crash test can take up to a full day to conduct. By further increasing this technology, Ford hopes to not only increase the number of virtual crash test but also obtain data more quickly as a result. The technological advancement can mean the difference in Ford further exceeding industrial safety standard in global markets. With the technological advances introduced in recent Ford vehicles like the new F-Series and the 2015 Ford Focus that introduced the new Sync AppLink System, Perpendicular Parking, Park-Out Assist, etc., there’s no surprise that safety is important. Stop by your local Ford dealership to check out the new safety features and test drive your new future Ford.

In regards to physical crash tests, Ford has been conducting crash tests from a variety of areas since 1954 including frontal, side, and rear impact tests with speeds ranging from less than 20mph to more than 55 mph.  Preparation for a physical crash test can take anywhere from a few days to weeks depending on the circumstances of the test. These vehicles need to be mounted with special equipment for capturing information such as special mounts, cameras, and sensors to capture crash force, displacement, and pressure.  Once the test has been conducted, Ford safety engineers review the crash data to determine the safety quality of the vehicle.

Last week we introduced the new, redesigned 2015 Ford Focus featuring Ecoboost. Lamarque Ford 2015 Ford Expedition

The Expedition made its first debut in 1996 as Ford’s largest utility vehicle. Today, the Expedition has come a long way in becoming the leader in interior space, performance, and the only full-size non-luxury independent rear suspension vehicle.

Don’t think that just because the new Expedition will feature the Ecoboost engine that it has lost any power. Quite the contrary, the new Expedition will have increased torque and horsepower, combined with an advanced suspension making driving more exciting.  The XLT sporty model and the urban Platinum models will each feature unique finishes customized to reflect your lifestyle and desires.  Other featured versions include the Limited and a new King Ranch edition that will further encompass the unique custom designs Ford fans are looking for. Best to stop at your local Ford dealership quickly because with these specs and brunello (red wine) leather, the 2015 Expedition is going to go fast.

February 27, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

With February and March being Ford Truck Month, it’s as good a time as any to know about the many different types of F-150 trucks available. While we all wait excitedly for the new 2015 Ford F-150 to arrive, there are many great options for the 2014 F-150 that can meet the needs of any truck enthusiasts. But if you’ve ever set foot on a Ford car dealership, you know that with all the different types of F-150s available it can be difficult to know which one is for you. While the 2014 F-150 comes in 10 different model types, here’s a look at some of the more popular types of F-150 trucks available.

Lamarque Ford 2014 F150

F-150 XL

The XL is the base model, and is also the most affordable. It comes with options for regular cab, super cab, or supercrew; 5.5in, 6.5in, or 8in box; and V6, V8, or Ford Ecoboost V6 engine. While it doesn’t come with many of the nice interior or exterior features that some of the more expensive models have, it has many optional add-ons such as a rear view camera or steering mounted controls. It’s simply a more stripped down, no-frills version of the F-150.

F-150 XLT

Similar to the F-150 XL, the XLT has all of the same options for cabs and boxes, but also has the additional option of the more powerful 6.2L V8 engine. The XLT also comes with its own optional convenience package or plus package, and comes standard with Ford’s Power Equipment Group. It also comes standard with SecuriCode keypad on the driver’s side, electronic 6-speed transmission with tow/haul mode, Ford SYNC, and chrome grille and chrome surround.

F-150 King Ranch

The King Ranch is a significant step up from the XL and XLT. While it is more expensive, it offers many additional features not found in more inexpensive models. The King Ranch comes only with the supercrew cab, and is available with the Ford Ecoboost engine or 5.0L V8. It also comes standard with the Trailer Tow package, leather bucket seats, and Dual Zone Electronic Automated Temperature Control.  The 18”, all-season tires that come equipped on the King Ranch make it well suited for those who need a powerful truck for working hard.

F-150 SVT Raptor

The Raptor is among the more powerful F-150 trucks available. Equipped standard with a 6.2L V8 engine, the SVT features a smaller size truck with a 5.5in box and either the super cab or supercrew. The SVT Raptor highlights high performance with tow/haul mode, hill descent/off-road mode, and Fox Racing Shox. It also has the optional 801A Entertainment package which includes the Raptor luxury package and Navigation System, including Sirius XM radio and Travel Link.

Mardi Gras New Orleans Guide 2014: Part 1 | New Orleans, LA

February 21, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

If there’s any time of the year that sums up New Orleans culture best, it’s Mardi Gras. Although frequently misunderstood by tourists, Mardi Gras encapsulates the best that New Orleans has to offer with food and drinks, unique culture, rich tradition, and most of all, having fun.  Although the observation of Mardi Gras in the United States dates back as early as the 17th century, it has evolved over the years to reflect changes in culture. But with so much to see and do during the entire Carnival season, it can be a bit overwhelming to know where to begin. While it would be nearly impossible to see everything the Mardi Gras season has to offer, you can at least experience some of the more well-known krewes.

New Orleans Mardi Gras 2014

Krewe of Rex

One of the oldest krewes in New Orleans, Rex has held more parades than any other organization in New Orleans. While they may not use as much cutting-edge technology as other parade krewes, it is without a doubt one of the most culturally rich krewes in the city. Rex’s floats are typically entirely hand built and use the same techniques that have been handed down over generations. Because of its rich tradition and ornate designs, many people consider Rex’s parade to be the highlight of the Mardi Gras season.

March 4 (Mardi Gras day) at 10:00am; Uptown

Krewe of Bacchus

Bacchus, among the most well-known of the so-called “superkrewes” due to their spectacular size and production, is certainly a spectacle. As opposed to Rex, which favors a more traditional approach, Bacchus relies much more heavily on modern approaches and technology to create bigger, more elaborate floats. Bacchus is also well known for its celebrity appearances. The first krewe to feature celebrities as kings of the parade, Bacchus celebrity kings have included Drew Brees, William Shatner, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, and many others.

March 2 at 5:15pm; Uptown

Krewe of Iris

While perhaps not as well-known as some of the bigger krewes in New Orleans, Iris is notable for being both the oldest and the largest all-female krewe in New Orleans. Like Bacchus, Iris also adheres more closely to the traditional Mardi Gras customs, wearing white gloves and full-face carnival masks. Iris parade throws include unique items such as cups, dolls, medallion beads, and doubloons, as well as the Krewe Captains own special doubloon which is a coveted item each year.

March 1 at 11:00am; Uptown

Although most festivities take place in New Orleans, you can also find Mardi Gras parades in Metairie and surrounding areas. If you feel a little adventurous or you’ve got extra time in your hands here’s the full Mardi Gras parade schedule.
