Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta are the company’s entry level vehicles, and as such, need to have a broader appeal than any other car in their lineup. Strong competition in the compact and sub-compact market has pushed Ford engineers and designers to innovate in new fronts, leading to better engines and outstanding aesthetics. Let’s see what the 2015 Ford Focus and 2015 Ford Fiesta bring to the table and how they stack up against each other.

The Basics: How Are Focus And Fiesta Different?

For starters, each car belongs to a different category, Fiesta to the sub-compact and Focus to the compact. However, many of our customers wonder, What is the difference between compacts and sub-comapcts? The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines a sub-compact as a vehicle that has between 85 cubic feet and 99 cubic feet of interior volume, which is a great car for daily commuters and customers looking for great fuel efficiency. Ford Focus, however, fits right into the compact category, as it includes any car between 161 in and 175 in long.

Designwise, both the 2015 Fiesta and 2015 Focus get the bold front grille that has defined Fords for the last few years. Actually, they look so much alike you can think of the Fiesta as a small version of the Focus, as they both come in hatchback and sedan versions.

2015 Fuel Economy

In 2012, Ford introduced the tiny 1.0 EcoBoost, which is a 3-cylinder engine capable of driving a 3,000 lb vehicle. First introduced in the Ford Fiesta, the 1.0 EcoBoost has matured and will be available in the 2015 Focus. So how does it work? Utilizing the latest engine technology, EcoBoost sips gas and maximizes its efficiency by using a turbo-charger, allowing more air into the fuel mix. While fuel ratings for the new Focus are not out yet, the 1.0 Fiesta gets an impressive 45 MPG.

In addition, Ford introduced an all-electric Focus, making the nameplate one of the most versatile in the market. Focus Electric gets an estimated rating of 110 MPG and customers might be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit.

Today, the Ford Fiesta has become the go-to model for a growing number of Americans that care about the environment but don’t want to sacrifice a fun ride. With the 2015 Ford Fiesta rolling out soon, here are some features and specifications to look out for in the upcoming model including a turbo-charged Ford Ecoboost engine.

Features: What’s New?

Following the Fiesta’s facelift in 2014, the 2015 Ford Fiesta remains virtually unchanged for the upcoming model. However, reports suggest a new color and a small price reduction might be on their way. Even when left untouched, the Fiesta retains its spot in the top five affordable small vehicles. Year after year, Ford has proven to have a strong contender in the Fiesta, as it carries over an impressive engine lineup and options only found in bigger sedans.

Exterior

The 2015 Ford Fiesta will return with two available body configurations, a hatchback and a sedan, and three engine options. The base model is an efficient 4-cylinder engine, offering up to 120 horsepower and 31 mpg combined. Entry level buyers should remain confident as the base Fiesta S offers enough punch and comfort to rival other cars in its price range. Ford will also be offering two turbo-charged Eco-Boost engine options: a 3-cylinder for the SE and Titanium models and a 4-cylinder performance option for the speedy ST version.

Interior

The interior of the new 2015 Ford Fiesta will feature AppLink capabilities for voice control function along with Ford SYNC for a complete hands-free experience for navigation and listening to music. The upcoming model will also feature an emergency assist system that notifies emergency services if a car accident occurs. For added safety, the 2015 Fiesta will also feature a driver knee airbag in addition to the standard dual front airbags.

Benefits of a Compact Car?

Although the Ford Fiesta is an affordable compact, it is not necessarily targeted at low-budget consumers. Anyone looking for great fuel economy should make the Fiesta an option. Reviewers of the sporty Fiesta ST praise its maneuverability and fast throttle response, and the fully-equipped versions stack up well against entry level luxury cars. Let’s also remember the engine offered in the ST model is the same found in the larger Ecoboost Ford Fusion, a 3,400 lb. vehicle (the Fiesta ST weighs 700 lbs. less!). Ford has found the perfect balance in the Fiesta with world-class fuel efficiency and a small-car, big-engine approach for the thrill-seeking driver.

Competition

In today’s crowded car market, competition has many names. Virtually every car manufacturer today offers subcompact models, from Honda’s Fit, the Fiat 500, Mazda 3 and Kia Rio, consumers have more options than ever. Many of us in the U.S. are not familiar with sub-compact cars, mainly because for years, car manufacturers sold these vehicles strictly outside of the country. Today, almost every brand offers a sub-compact in their lineup and they seem to be gaining traction again. Sub-compacts have evolved from underpowered, cramped and unsafe vehicles to real and viable options for everyday car drivers. Technology today has made it possible to use smaller engines without sacrificing power or efficiency, while better safety devices have become standard in all cars.

Following the 1973 oil crisis, U.S. car manufacturers increased their small car/small engine production and in 1976, The Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford Fiesta, a 3 door hatchback equipped with a 4 cylinder engine. The Fiesta has sold over 16 million units worldwide since its inception, most of them outside the U.S. The Ford Fiesta was absent from the American market for 30 years after being discontinued in 1980. However, 2010 saw a renewed interest in small cars and the Fiesta came back home. For 2014, Ford took the world by surprise and the new Fiesta ST is raking up awards all over the place.

So what makes the 2014 Fiesta ST such a winner? For starters, is one of the only cars in this segment to sport a turbo-charged engine, which makes it extremely fun to drive. In the past, automakers have taken a local or regional approach when developing cars, effectively tailoring cars to specific markets. This time, however, Ford has taken a global approach in the design and marketing of the Fiesta ST and the efforts have paid off. In addition to its powerful engine, the ST offers racing inspired seats and interior, only available in pricier vehicles.

New to this generation’s Fiesta is Ford’s new design language, which is present in other models such as the Taurus, Focus, Fusion and C-Max. The new design is “meaner” looking, with dropped down headlamps and lowered hood for better air intake, along with a redesign grille that adds a sporty look across the brand. The best part about the Fiesta ST is the price, as it is still considered an economy car.
