Earlier this year, Ford announced new technologies and updates to its police interceptor models, which put them at the forefront of law enforcement vehicles. Today, Ford is adding a new feature that allows police departments to monitor individual cars in real-time, giving way to a more transparent and accountable police force. Along with software company Telogis and drawing heavily from their Crew Chief fleet technology, Ford was able to deliver a unique system currently unmatched by competitors.
Ford Telematics for Law Enforcement seeks to improve police efficacy by monitoring driving habits, maintenance logs, location and other important information. The collected data can be seen real time or processed for later use. Since vehicle accidents are the leading cause of police officer deaths, any change in their training and driving behavior can be beneficial. Also, in case of accidents, police will usually retrieve the cop car black box for later examination, adding unnecessary time to investigations. With the new system, most analytics are sent wirelessly to a command center where they can be constantly monitored.
Police agencies will have a tighter grip on officers, since they will be able to tell whether cops are using their safety belts, how often they engage pursuit mode, how hard brakes are being applied, cruiser speed, stability control events, etc. The data aggregate is then used to improve training, either on a general base or individually, Ford gives agencies the flexibility they need. Most of the research needed for Ford Telematics was conducted in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Department, which allowed for a fine-tuned solution that suited one of the most demanding police forces.
In the end, this new technology by Ford and Telogis will be a win–win for both police agencies and the community. As law enforcement becomes more capable with technology, it also becomes more manageable and transparent. Ford telematics is another example of Ford’s safety strategy, which focuses both on consumer products and fleet services for corporations and government agencies.
Ford Telematics for Law Enforcement will start rolling out next year in Ford Explorer and Taurus Interceptors.
