Shelby GT350 Mustang: The Legend Returns | Lamarque Ford | New Orleans

November 10, 2014 By Matthew Hritz Leave a Comment

2015 seems like the right year for Mustang, as it is not only getting a full redesign, but Ford is also bringing back an American legend. That’s right, early next year, Ford enthusiasts will be able to get the Shelby GT350 Mustang in all of its glory, with what Ford is claiming to be their most powerful naturally aspirated production engine ever shipped. Let’s find out what makes the Shelby GT350 Mustang such an important icon both on the track and on the street.

First off, a little bit of history. The name Shelby became famous by the mid 60’s, when Carol Shelby and his team decided to modify a Mustang for track racing. The result? The first Shelby GT350, a small, light, super-powerful Mustang also referred to as the “Cobra” with a 4.7 l. V8. Since this original version was meant for the track and racing purposes, it was never thought of as a comfortable street car. More recent versions of the Shelby will combine comfort and drivability as well as powerful engines.

So what’s in store for 2015? The new 2015 Mustang takes design cues from the 1965 model, also called fast-back for its roofline that continuously down slopes to the back. Early in the development, Ford engineers decided a natural aspirated engine would better suit the Shelby, as opposed to a super-charged one. The 2015 Shelby GT350 relies on a 5.2 V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, which allows for better engine breathing resulting in overall better performance. This type of engine configuration is only found in racing cars and European supercars.

Ford claims this engine will deliver over 500 horsepower and more than 400 pounds of torque, which should make it a delight on the track. In addition to the engine improvements, Ford is adding a new injection-molded carbon fiber grille and lower brace, which improves stiffness in the structure. Other improvements include an all-aluminum hood, flat-bottom steering wheel, extra-stiff 19-in aluminum wheels, and more.

The 2015 Ford Mustang is not only an excellent street sports car, but it is also the best foundation for a racing car. Check out other versions like the Mustang GT and the 700-HP Mustang.

With the all-new 2015 Mustang scheduled to hit dealerships in December, the final specs are rolling in. Several car magazines have done their own tests and they all agree on one thing: the new Mustang is awesome! The 2015 Mustang comes in three engine configurations: a 3.7 liter V6 , a 4-cylinder turbo-charged Ecoboost, and a 5.0 GT.

The standard entry level engine is a 3.7 V6, and it was the first to introduce twin Ti-VCT technology to the Mustang lineup. The V6 produces 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft of torque, which ensure a fun ride. However, the best features are its standard equipment, which for 2015 include an independent-rear suspension, 17″ aluminum wheels, HID headlamps with signature lighting, dual exhaust, LED tail lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and hand brake, and more. The V6 is definitely a great options for first time sports car buyers.

Next comes the four-cylinder EcoBoost, which produces more power and torque than the V6 while getting better gas mileage. The 2.3 is Mustang’s first EcoBoost as it now joins the rest of the Ford family. EcoBoost engines are designed to perform better than bigger legacy engines while reducing emissions. Thanks to its twin turbo-chargers and a new exhaust system, the EcoBoost Mustang hopes to be the most popular model.

Finally, we meet the powerful 5.0 V8. This GT model tops at 435 horsepower and 400 lb. of torque, thanks to improvements like a new intake manifold. The GT’s performance package includes 19 in wheels, a larger radiator, Brembo brakes, and updated suspension for better stability.

Remember to stop by Lamarque Ford and test drive the all-new Mustang next month.

Mustang Design Features

The 2015 Mustang shares little with its predecessors, as the new car has been completely redesigned. The most noticeable change comes to the front of the car, as the hood has been lowered significantly and the headlights came forward. This affects the whole silhouette of the car and it projects a more aggressive look, giving the Mustang a longer hood and more recessed cabin. From front to back, the bold lines chiseled on the side panels take you to the Mustang’s slimmed down ‘hips’, which have as much taste as they have an aerodynamic purpose. The rear wheels, however, are offset twenty millimeters outwards on each side, giving the 2015 Mustang a wider back fender which complements the muscle car look.

Despite the full redesign, the 2015 model is unmistakably a Mustang. The new silhouette and roof line helped modernize the car, while giving it the fastback profile reminiscent of the 1964 and 1965 models. The design team also set to give Mustang a more three-dimensional look, which is visible on the surfacing of the taillights and the side panels.

Performance

Although the company has been mum about horsepower and fuel rating, details about engine configurations and trims are readily available. The base model sports a 3.7 liter V6, similar to the current 2014 offering that achieves 305 horsepower with a manual transmission. New to the line-up is a 4 cylinder Ecoboost Mustang, with a 2.3 liter engine and the signature turbocharger seen across these fuel efficient engines. Ford assures that the high-capacity direct injection system and the twin-scroll low-inertia turbocharger will give Mustang Ecoboost an improved time-to-torque and exhilarating driving dynamics. As always, a 5.0 liter V8 joins the party with a promised increase in performance.

Technology Improvements

Ford has designed the 2015 Mustang completely around the driver’s needs, hence all the new features serve the daunting task of enhancing driving experience. All 2015 Mustangs come standard with intelligent access / push-to-start button technology, which means that as long as the key is on you, you can unlock and start the car without reaching into your pocket. Blind Spot Information System is also available, a system that warns you when vehicles are approaching you from blind spots.

The Convertible

The Ford Motor company has in essence designed two different 2015 Mustangs, the fastback and the convertible. Ford claims the 2015 drop top was conceived from the ground up to be a convertible, and its lines and styling show just that. Whether the top is up or down, the 2015 Mustang has a great character and an undeniable Mustang look.
