Gas and prices have tanked this year, often under $2 a gallon. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 271,000 for the week that ended Nov. 14, the Labor Department said. Claims have now held below the 300,000 mark for 37 consecutive weeks, the longest stretch in years, and are not too far from levels last seen in the early 1970s.
And it couldn’t have come at a better time.
During the long holiday weekend, 46.9 million Americans are expected to go 50 miles or more from home, the highest number since 2007, according to travel agency and car lobbying group AAA.
So with a little extra money in their pockets and family time, Americans will start smiling again.
