Although Ford hasn’t updated the Expedition’s body in eight years, the 2015 model offers the best updates seen in a while. It also stacks up well against more modern competitors like Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and Escalade. So what’s in store for the top-notch 2015 Ford Expedition King Ranch? And why is it still such a popular option? Let’s find out.
Same Body, New EcoBoost Engine
Back in 2000, Ford introduced a heavy-duty, full-size SUV called Excursion, which had bold looks, a wide array of gas (and diesel) thirsty engines, and a giant body (it was known for being the largest and heaviest pick up truck in the planet) . Although consumers loved the Excursion, Ford retired the name plate five short years later to focus on its heavy-duty pick-up trucks. Since, consumers have turned to larger versions of Ford Expedition, like the King Ranch EL, which still offer a similar heavy-duty look and the comfort and space the manufacturer once offered.
Today, gone are the standard V8 and V10 engines with displacements of up to 7.3 liters for the diesel versions. With the new EcoBoost technology, Ford is able to drive a 6,000 lb SUV with a V6 3.5 liter engine. That’s right, the 2015 Expedition outperforms V8 Tahoes and Suburbans alike with its 365 horsepower output and 21 highway mpgs. So while Chevy and GM SUVs have changed dramatically on the outside, Ford Expedition gained new guts.
2015 Expedition King Ranch Features
King Ranch models have long been known for its brown accents, both on the interior and exterior. The 2015 Expedition is no different, and features perforated leather-trimmed, heated/cooled seats, King Ranch mandatory embroidery, rear-view camera and SYNC with MyFord Touch. For customers missing the old Excursion, these are more than welcome changes, as they add to the superior comfort and refined taste only the King Ranch offers.
The exterior’s most noticeable changes are the front grille and redesigned bumper, which match heavy duty Fords. The company also offers 22-in wheels, updated headlights and tail lamps, and other minor upgrades like a chrome trim. Although the exterior hasn’t been revised in a few years, the Expedition EL comes with a better towing package than that of a Suburban, allowing it to tow up to 9,000 pounds.
In all, the 2015 King Ranch Expedition is still a solid large SUV contender thanks to its new EcoBoost engine. Let’s hope Ford brings the imminent exterior redesign sooner than later.
