Summer is right around the corner. Thinking about taking a vacation? How about taking a road trip somewhere? Every year, more and more Americans are hitting the open road. In fact, about half of traveling families are expecting to pack up their cars for a road trip in 2019. If you do plan on hitting the road this summer, Lamarque Ford has some tips for you and your family to stay safe and enjoy the ride.
Get your car up to speed
Once you’ve chosen your destination, make sure you give your car a good clean, inside and out. Next, about a week before you leave, bring your car to a mechanic (like Quick Lane at Lamarque Ford) and ask them to check things like fluids, tires (including your spare), and your battery. You don’t want to breakdown in the middle of farm country Illinois, then wait hours for a tow truck.
Roadside assistance is your friend
Speaking of waiting for a tow truck, make sure your roadside assistance is good to go for your road trip. Don’t have roadside assistance? It might be in your best interest to sign up for a service, either through a third party or your insurance.
Make sure the cooler is stocked
No one likes a “hangry” driver. Keep a cooler filled with drinks and sandwiches and have snacks, like trail mix and chips, handy. You’ll make good time if you keep your stops limited to gas fill-ups and bathroom breaks only.
Find something to pass the time
Tuning through regional radio can get boring. Try downloading some music, a podcast or an audiobook to pass the time. For your passengers, download a movie or a TV series they can watch. Or try a classic car game, like I Spy!
Know your route
Make sure you map out the route you will be taking beforehand and recruit your passenger to help you navigate. The most efficient way to map your route is to use a phone or some other GPS device. However, it is also a good idea to bring along a paper map, just in case service is spotty or something happens to the device.
Plan loosely
Have an estimated time of arrival, but the keyword is ESTIMATED. When driving you should account for things like road closures and rush hour traffic. Don’t plan your trip down to the last second. Life happens.
Explore the scenic route
If do you have a little extra time, veer off the interstate for a bit and take a back road. One of the best things about a road trip is seeing all the beautiful things America has to offer. Take advantage of it.
Just enjoy the ride
For some, road trips are not just about the destination, they are also about the quality time you spend with your family. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride with your family.
From everyone at Lamarque Ford, have safe and happy summer travels!
